materials, the equipment maker reported one more blow-out quarter. i think it's a steal that's why item thrilled to have garry dickerson, the ceo of plooid materials here with us today. he's here to speculate his 50th anniversary. mr. dickerson welcome back to "mad money." >> thank you jim, happy to be here >> i go through the reports here, you're saying we're at the start of a complete new era of growth, there are a lot of skeptics, i know i'm not one of them you got to answer them who say, are you kidding me it's got to be mere the end. look at the stock price of materials. >> well, jim we just finished a record quarter, our revenue up 40% and our profit up 2 times that amount.
6:18 pm
in the history of applied tae materials there's never been a investment time in that company. we see this in retail today, healthcare, transportation, many many many different areas and at the foundation of that technology is applied materials with materials innovation. our semiconductor business is hitting on all cylinders our display business, we see multi versions so we're firing all cylinders jim, and the nature of our confrontation is changing these industries, that's filling our business that's something we've never seen in the history of our company. >> okay you're calling ai a war, and it's shaping up to be the biggest battle of our life time. what do you mean by that
6:19 pm
>> many people talk about trillion dollars of economic value about created. tech folg is going to transform all these different industries in the ai, big data era there are a few drivers. one is everything is becoming smarter. we have sensor technologies, many many smart devices, that is growing our business 40% of our foundry business now is coming from all of the smart devices. the memory businesses is also growing at a rate that we've never seen before. all of these smart driess are creating a tremendous amount of data, data's exploding and the memory business is growing at a rate we've never seen. the profitability of memory companies is better than we've ever seen. and also to valley capture the data you have to take the data and process it with
6:20 pm
high-processing performing computing. those materials come frapplied materials. so the smart devices, the memory technology, all of that are fundamental big drivers for our future business. >> last time you were on, gave short drift to display you did not do that on the conference call, you gave a lot of talk to it. i don't know i'm a big fan of lamb because you watch the showism what they have is very competitive products but wen it comes to display it is yours please tell our viewers what this display is doing here because the growth here is phenomenal >> you have organic led displays for mobile devices and smart phones there's then annual war for mobility ship. every year consumers are buying
6:21 pm
the devices that have tremendous displays, and we have multi use drivers there. the capacity that's currently being put in place will serve 50% of the smart phone business between now and 2020 that's a multi year driver display. we also have large screen televisions. one great example is if you're building a bigger panel, you can get 8, 65-inch television on those bigger panels. on the previous generations you only get three, 65-inch t.v.s. both of these drivers are multi display drivers. our display is up 5 x. next year we're saying significant growth in revenue.
6:22 pm
we're not competing with other large semiconductor companies in this display business. tremendous multi year driver >> one last question you mentioned your clients have a lot of money there are so many skeptics, and item not one but a lot of time people say when people have a lot of machine they tend to overspend but you are not, you're seeing discipline opponent of these customers right? >> absolutely. if you look at all the smart devices jim, you talk about this a lot on your show, there's an explosion of all these smart devices and this is going to continue to grow the memory devices also, that is growing with this explosion of data they're also crossing over with solid state versus hard drives so it's way more cost effective with power and heat to garner those ssd devices.
6:23 pm
we've never seen these in the past what's going to change our world in the next ten years is the aai big data so you combine all those thing together, people have a hard time because they try to extrapolate from the past. we have some faculfundamental dt are multi drivers. so we see clear line of sight, jim. tremendous revenue growth from 2018 and beyond. >> thank you to garry dickerson, the ceo from applied materials "mad money's" back after the break.
